ESIL Travel Grants Schemes finalized for 12th Annual ESIL Conference in Riga

The European Society of International Law offers travel grants to encourage and facilitate attendance at its Annual Conferences and Research Forums. Travel grants are awarded under two different schemes: the Early Career Scheme and the Developing/Emerging Economies Scheme. Whilst travel grants are normally awarded to applicants presenting a paper, limited support may also be available to non-presenting participants (see below).

NOTE: Applications for the 2016 Annual Conference in Riga are now open and will close on 6 June 2016 (notification of decisions by 27 June 2016).

EARLY CAREER SCHEME:

Eligibility

Applicants must be PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers within two years of completion of their PhD. Applications from researchers who receive financial support from their institution or any other organization will not be accepted. Though ESIL membership is not a pre-requisite to apply, all travel grant recipients will be expected to become ESIL members to receive the grant.

Points System

When more applications are received than available grants, applications will be ranked using a points system. The following criteria will be applied:

- Status on program (paper presenter/discussant/chair/non-presenter)
- Gender balance (inclusive of all gender identities)
- Geographic origin (priority given to scholars based in emerging/developing countries. List available here)
- Contribution to ESIL (priority given to applicants who have demonstrated special engagement with ESIL, such as engagement with Interest Groups or past ESIL membership)
- Past awards (priority to applicants who have not previously been awarded a travel grant)

Value of Award

Presenters

Non-presenters: €150 regardless of region

Application Procedure

  • Application forms (available here) must be submitted to: secretariat@eui.eu
  • Applicants will be notified of the decision by email.
  • Grants will be paid to recipients after the event (proof of attendance required).

DEVELOPING/EMERGING ECONOMIES SCHEME:

Eligibility

Applicants must be based in an emerging/developing country. The list of eligible countries (per capita GDP below 15,000$, based on World Bank data) is available here. Though ESIL membership is not a pre-requisite to apply, all travel grant recipients are expected to be ESIL members to receive the grant.
